Title Page of Sisters, a family saga that traces the intertwined lives of women bound by blood and choice

Spanning decades of love, loss, and fractured bonds, this memoir-novel follows one woman’s quiet, determined effort to reconstruct the life of her older sister Franziska—brilliant, beautiful, and perpetually in motion.

Through the narrator’s recollections, Franziska’s restless path unfolds: a dazzling circle of international friends, an ill-fated romance with a Turkish student, a marriage to a controlling Spaniard, and the accumulating estrangements that slowly unravel the family. From childhood closeness to long stretches of silence and betrayal, the sisters’ relationship is tested by secrets, cultural fault lines, and the unyielding authority of their father.

Now the last survivor of her family, the narrator turns to photographs, fragments of memory, and unresolved grief, seeking not judgment but understanding. In bearing witness to both the radiance and the sorrow of her sister’s life, she discovers that remembrance itself can be an act of love.

At once intimate and expansive, Sisters is a meditation on sisterhood, exile, and resilience—on how love persists, even when shaped by absence, silence, and what remains forever unfinished.
